FS2004 Scenery for Keflavik Airport and Naval Air Station, Iceland (BIKF)

Keflavik Airport was created in early 1942 as a response to the United States Armys need for a relay and patrol station in the North Atlantic During World War II. After servicing admirably as a Gateway to the North against German raiders and submarines Keflavik was soon to return to this duty against the Soviet Union during the long years of the cold war. Operated by the U.S. Air Force until 1961 it was then turned over to the U.S. Navy as a key defensive point for the NATO fleets.

Operating a continuous patrol of Early-warning and Antisubmarine aircraft, Keflavik Naval Station was home to many military squadrons and particularly the 51st Fighter Squadron which called Keflavik home for over 40 years before is was disbanded in 1995. For the next 10 years a regular rotation of E-3 Sentrys, P-3 Orions, and F-15 Eagles covered the vital northern flank of the Western democracies. Although the Naval Air Station closed in 2006 there is still a military presence in Iceland during the deactivation and cleanup. The United States Navy also maintains a Search and Rescue facility which operates numerous fixed and rotatry-wng craft assigned to the 56th Rescue Squadron.

As the post World War II air liner trade blossomed Keflavik also began to see more and more civilian traffic along the great circle route to Europe. Eventually in 1987 the Icelanders built the Beautiful Leifur Eiriksson Air Terminal which finally separated the Civil traffic from the Military base. As civil traffic increased so did the Eiriksson terminal with building expansions and the addition of a dedicated cargo facility on the west apron. This scenery attempts to present Keflavik more or less as it appears today.

I have tried to create a frame-rate friendly scenery. If, however, you encounter loading problems you may want to try removing scenery components that you feel may be extraneous. All the objects are XML based and can be individually moved, deleted, etc. by most of the many freeware object programs out there as well as pay-programs like Abacus EZ Scenery or Flight Ones Instant Scenery. The Civil and Military facilities have been separated so that one may be removed while retaining the other.

Scenery Installation:

1) Unzip the downloaded file and you should have a folder called Keflavik (BIKF) package and these
    instructions.

2) Open this folder and remove the Effects folder. Place the complete Effects folder into your
X:\Flight Simulator 9 folder. If you have installed some of my previous sceneries you may
already have the effect files so you can overwrite if prompted.

3) Place the complete Keflavik (BIKF) folder into your X:\FS9\Addon Scenery folder.
    Example: X:\Flight Simulator 9\Addon Scenery\Keflavik (BIKF)

4) Place the complete Scenery folder into your main FS9 folder and overwrite if prompted. This folder
contains world scenery textures which are necessary for the scenery to work properly. FAILURE
TO LOAD THESE TEXTURES MAY LEAD TO UNEXPECTED RESULTS INCLUDING
SIMULATOR LOCK-UP OR THE GAME FAILING TO LOAD AT ALL. If you do not wish to load
these files please see the additional instructions in the file Special World Texture readme.txt

5) Active the scenery using the FS9 scenery menu at startup and you should be good to go.

6) This scenery was assembled so that the Civil and Military elements could be applied independently
so you can have only one aspect of the airport active if desired. Simply go to the Keflavik scenery
folder and remove the appropriate .bgl files. For a civil-only airport just remove all the .bgl files that
contain the word military and for a Military-only field remove those .bgl files that contain the word
     civil.

**Special Note**
Some objects will require prior installation of my Military Ground Service Vehicle Libraries to display properly. These libraries are available at www.Avsim.com under the file names jgse_j3.zip and ggse_j3.zip. This was done to reduce the package download size. These vehicles are used in over a dozen of my other sceneries and I didnt want to make people download them over and over. I apologize for any inconvenience this causes but I thought it was the best compromise.

As a bonus, users of more recent MAIW packages which contain my scenery elements will also find a number of other scenery objects available only to users of those packages so check the website (http://www.militaryaiworks.com) periodically and keep up with the latest Military AI.

7) Instructions for installing the AI aircraft are in the Keflavik AI Aircraft.zip file.
